When you’re first moving it’s easy to forget little things. But if you’re not careful, you could be living without a few essentials until you get the chance to make another trip out and do some more shopping. That’s why it’s best to do some of your shopping beforehand, especially for the small things that you can’t live without.
If you’re going to be in your new apartment for more than just a day, or have other people staying with you (like a roommate) then it’s a good idea to stock up on some basic kitchen supplies. Whether it’s a few extra plates, mugs, glasses, or bowls, this is a quick and easy item to pick up that can make your life a lot more comfortable.
The same goes for towels and bedding. Even if your place comes fully furnished, it’s a good idea to bring some linens for your bed and towels for the bathroom. You can buy them at the store for a pretty cheap price, and it will save you a whole lot of hassle when you’re packing to move.
You might want to stock up on some cleaning supplies you first moving as well, so you’ll be prepared for your first cleaning after the move. You can always grab some cleaning spray and a sponge for surface cleaning, but having some cleaning wipes in case of accidental spills or dirty fingers is also smart. If you’re a fan of natural products, then buying some non-toxic cleaners is also a good idea.
Finally, don’t forget a few first aid items. Whether you cut yourself on a box or just feel achy from all the lifting, having some band-aids and ointment on hand will help ensure that you’re not left with any serious injuries after your big move.
If you’re able, take the time to walk through your new place before you begin to pack for it. This will give you the opportunity to figure out how much space everything will have and where it’ll go, which will make it easier when it comes time to unpack.
Before the move, be sure to set up utilities at your new place. This includes electricity, gas, water and phone service. Be aware that you may be charged a transfer or setup fee, so it’s important to contact each company ahead of time to let them know about your move.
Don’t forget to check in with your landlord before the move as well. They may have certain requirements for when you’re able to move in, such as an inspection. Be sure to ask what the process is and how long it will take. This will help you avoid any surprises and make the move go as smoothly as possible.
